The bill proposed by two legislators seems to be on target to help get the needed financing but it will come at a price for the athletes and the team.
Two Republican legislators sent a letter outlining the plan, according to Mark Kaszuba of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The $300 million will be raised from a variety of new fees and taxes.
The question is whether these fees and taxes will be well received. They include:
- a sports memorabilia tax;
- stadium naming rights being granted to the state;
- a scratch-off lottery game;
- and a pro football player income tax surcharge.
The extra tax on fans and the players is not likely to receive broad support and the team itself is very concerned about giving up control of the naming rights for the stadium.
