About

Welcome to From the Bench.  We are excited to bring you this blog which will follow the world of sports law and its quirky implications on the business of sports.  We will analyze and look at how the various legal issues involving sports organizations, players, sponsors, teams, leagues and media impact our enjoyment as sports fan.

As an instructor in Northwestern University’s Masters in Sports Administration Program, I teach a class in the Legal and Ethical Issues in Sports Management.  I found that every single week there were dozens of stories that received little coverage or analysis by the major website and networks.  And the little coverage they received tended to gloss over the true implications and significant precedents that we established.  In addition, there was no good source for aggregating the information to be able to quantify the number of incidents that occurred in each of the many categories that we cover.

From The Bench was conceived in order to provide daily coverage of these issues.  While some of the stories we post don’t have extensive analysis, we feel it is important to get that information into our site to provide a full history of the incidents.   FTB also tries to look behind the stories t understand the fallout from the stories and the details that are not examined or properly explained by the popular media.

We welcome your input and feedback about our site and the stories that we cover.  You will see section on the site that have not been fully populated yet but we are continually working on new methods for ensuring that we will be able to update all of these areas in a timely fashion so that FTB become your primary resource for these stories.

If you have any questions, we look forward to hearing from you.
